Family Album

Looking at these four photographs, I am struck by the looming presence of the desert in each of them, particularly in the background. Each of these shots takes place outside, in the desert, either around our home or on some sort of hike. In the first one I (in my Florida hat) I am casually posed next to a sign warning of the imminent danger of rattlesnakes (one per every hundred feet in Tucson, supposedly). In the next I am proudly holding aloft what appears to be a Mountain Dew in front of the Grand Canyon with my brother and cousin, hugging my dog whilst my oldest sister holds pruning sheers for a day of transplanting, laughing with my brother and grandfather in front a saguaro cactus.
This is my default mood of the desert- a place of joviality, family togetherness, certainly not a place of conservation or anything to be worried about in terms of future available groundwater. Is this the default mood of everyone in Arizona, laughing and joking, assuming that the natural beauty which surrounds us will continue into the future.
